Nicolas C. Johnson joined SLA in 2001 as a partner. He is an expert in energy project development and his knowledge and industry experience as a strategic, business minded attorney has allowed his practice to flourish within the renewable energy industry in particular. The balance of his legal practice focuses on representing clients in the litigation of commercial and civil claims and on serving clients with international development bank issues and arbitration matters.

Nicolas has strong international negotiation experience, having handled major aspects of financing for large international energy and infrastructure projects, having drafted and negotiated construction related agreements for wind, solar, biomass and gas turbine installations, having assisted in dispute resolution with regard to delays in delivery of equipment, services and turbines for international energy projects, and having conducted detailed legal analysis and participated in feasibility studies for international development bank funded energy projects.

Nicolas has acted as counsel in multiple due diligence review processes for renewable energy project transactions. He has conducted detailed legal analysis of those projects and has optimized his clients’ position in potential transactions. In the course of his work, Nicolas has successfully matched funding with experienced renewable energy developers to create and develop portfolios of wind, solar and biomass projects. He has worked to create successful joint ventures for clients to develop pipelines of projects and has been involved in hydropower and conventional power development activities as well.

Prior to this, Nicolas had served from 1999 – 2001 as the Assistant Editor to the German Yearbook of International Law and as a Research Fellow at the Walther Schücking Institute for International Law in Kiel, Germany.  Nicolas received B.A. degrees in History and in International Studies and from Emory University and holds a Juris Doctor degree from the District of Columbia School of Law. He is a native of Washington, D.C. and speaks German.
